Sleeping on the street for a plastic watch

And why this was never about the watch

Police controlling crowds.
5-day (!) lines.
Grown men camping outside boutiques like it’s an iPhone launch in 2011.

Amazing times.

The new AP x Swatch collab dropped and suddenly everybody became a watch expert.

Case diameter.
Movement.
Heritage.

Funny.

Because two weeks ago, most people couldn’t pronounce Audemars Piguet without sounding like they ordered a French dessert.

But now they’re ready to queue for hours, refresh stock trackers like crypto traders in 2021 and post wrist shots like they just inherited a Rolex from Pablo Escobar.

Why?

Because ownership is no longer the flex.

Timing is.

Being early became more valuable than having taste.

The internet changed the game.

People don’t discover things anymore. They perform discovery.

Publicly.

That’s why nobody really cares about the watch itself.

The watch is just proof.

Proof you were there. Proof you moved fast. Proof you caught the wave early enough.

The modern trophy isn’t possession. It’s participation.

And honestly, that’s why collabs work so well.

AP gives status.
Swatch makes it reachable.

The customer gets luxury without the discomfort of originality.

Because most people don’t actually want original taste.

They want RECOGNIZABLE taste.

Safe coolness. Culturally approved identity.

And the scary part?

The system works perfectly.

Queues became marketing.
Memes became advertising.
Resellers became influencers.

Even people mocking the collab help it grow.

Well, especially them.

But maybe the real luxury today is something else entirely.

An opinion untouched by algorithms. The ability to like something before the internet tells you to. Or not like it at all.

Because nowadays people don’t buy products.

They rent excitement for 48 hours…

Then move to the next drop.

And the next one after that.

Maybe that’s the real collab.

Luxury x attention deficit.

Have a great day & stay rare,
Tino
